Here’s some info from Domino:

“For me, listening to James Yorkston’s music is like coming across the interesting-looking person on the fringes of a party. Before you know it, you’ve spent the evening listening to their compelling tale. In this record, I get a real sense that he has found his true voice. There’s a quiet confidence in his craft; his singing, the words and instrumentation, all blend seamlessly to produce a really affecting record.” - Philip Selway, Radiohead

With the understated power of a gentle giant, James Yorkston returns with his 4th studio album. When the Haar Rolls In is out on the 1st of September and proves once again why he is one of the most essential songwriters of our time.Returning with his trusty Athletes, along with some legendary English folk names - Norma Waterson, Mike Waterson, Marry Gilhooly, Olly Knight, there is much to mine for Yorkston fans of old and new, all the ambition, beauty and pathos of his previous albums is sweeping through with the soothing, lush arrangements of all sorts: the timpani, clarinets, violins, vibraphone, concertinas, bull bass, prepared pianos, mandolins, bouzoukis, banjos and wine glasses.”What is’ Haar?” you may ask. It’s the sea fog that rolls in off the North Sea. Mist. It’s pretty common up in the East Neuk of Fife and plays havoc with drying the washing, apparently. There are more celebrations of human frailty and tales of waking up drunk in unfamiliar surroundings, throwing rocks at magpies, dogs chasing ghosts, stubborn sea winds, regrets and joys and smiles and peace and quiet and love and hate and more love. Better than that though, it’s a beautiful, honest album. And for the obsessive James Yorkston fans amongst us; there something very special indeed, we have 1000 limited When the Haar Rolls In Deluxe Box Sets including:- CD edition of When the Haar Rolls In and double 10″ vinyl Long Player of When the Haar Rolls In which will include an extra track
- CD of James Yorkston songs covered by Archie Bronson Outfit, King Creosote, U.N.P.O.C and others
- CD of James Yorkston remixes including the rare Four Tet remix of ‘The Lang Toun’
- Exclusive James Yorkston Pin Badge
- Exclusive James Yorkston Canvas Bag… Not only this; one of the 1000 box sets will have a Golden Ticket which will grant one very lucky fan their very own James Yorkston composition written just for them and, if within reasonable distance, James has agreed to perform the song live at their home town.

I’ll keep things up to date as they come in. In the meantime, see below for London & Edinburgh shows.

All the best,

JY

I am so excited about these new discs! When are you coming to the U.S.? (Specifically Portland Oregon :) ) I would love to see you play live…

  6. jy Says:

    Hello Esther,

Not sure when, or if, I’ll be over in America this time, we’ll have to wait and see. I know the album is scheduled for Nov 4th over there, but I guess the box set will be sold out by then, so you’re maybe best off ordering one from the UK?

I was just over in Spain playing with a few folk from Portland Oregon. Laura Gibson? And a band called Spain, funnily enough.

    Ho hum,

    JY

Hi James. I heard 2 songs from your new album on the Donal Dineen radio show on Today FM here in Ireland last night.I did not catch the titles as it’s on after midnight and I was slumbering in bed!! The second track Donal played was the last track on his show at 2 am and was a long one but I have to say it was brillant.I can’t wait for September! Just listening to Woozy With Cider as I type this! Any shows in Dublin soon?

  9. jy Says:

    Hello Colm,
I think I may be doing Donal’s stage at Electric Picnic and there’s talk of a show in Dublin after that at somepoint. we’ll see. the track he played was the title track, fairly sure.
    cheers,
    JY

  10. Billy Says:

Funnily enough ‘Woozy with Cider’ came up on lastfm so I came to check what was happening and I find this great news. How is it all going to work, will it be a discbox type package a la Radiohead or will they be released seperately? Is Rustin Man involved?

  11. Chris Broughton Says:

Best album title yet - here in Hastings we have frets rather than haars, and I suppose ‘When The Fret Rolls In’ would have worked, too, had James been a southerner.

Perfect release date, also. JY albums are always an autumn indulgence for me. Really looking forward to this, and to hearing David Thomas B and Cathal Coughlan covering Athletes songs. Tip-top!

Incidentally, I had no idea Spain were still going. Or have they reformed thanks to some irresistible multi-million pound deal?

  12. jy Says:

    Hello Billy,

No, there’s no Rustin Man involved, although I was recording a clarinet part for him earlier today, funnily enough. The cover & remix CDs as far as I’m aware are only available in the boxset.

I think Spain are currently working on new material. I didn’t know them, but chatting afterwards, that’s what they implied. Nice people.

    Cheers,

    JY

have just ordered the box set but domino don’t seem to deliver to the uae (and i don’t really trust the postal service here anyway) so i’ll have to wait until i’m home at christmas to get my hands on it, bah! something to very much look forward to though.

  15. RC Says:

    Mr Yorkston,

I’m another big fan from Portland, Oregon. I was surprised to see Portland’s Washington Park featured at the end of your “Steady As She Goes” video. It would make a nice venue for your first Portland show. :)

  17. Douglas Says:

You said the album would be released in the US on Nov 4 - who will be handling the release in the US? Is/will it be available for preorder? And, to echo several commets above… please tour the US!

    Thank you!

  18. jy Says:

    Hello,

Domino Record Co US will be handling the US release. I think the box-set is available for pre-order - follow the link above and when you get to “Delivery Details step 2/4″ select USA from the drop down menu. Domino US will also be selling copies of the boxset from their website closer to the time.
I’d love to come back to America, but that’s in the hands of Domino US, I’m afraid! Here’s hoping.

    Cheers,

I’ve just heard a promo of ‘Haar’ it it is simply wonderful ! Best yet from the Neuker boy. The review in the Observer music weekly gave it a general thumbs up but just three stars out of five. Reason being apparently,it continues in the same vein as previous discs ? I don’t agree actually. Haar sounds a much more rounded affair…deeper and richer than previous records. Excellent though they were. Unusually, this was one record that hit me emotionally between the eyes on the first listen. No slow burner this one ! That’s pretty unusual I would say.
Haven’t had time to evaluate it track by track…just one listen so far…but the final 8 + minute track..Capture of the horse..is a classic….beautiful !
Thanks for brightening up a dreary summer. Hope you get to the north west of England in the not too distant future.

  20. Weaver Says:

Had my first couple of spins of the new record, and I think it’s absolutely beautiful, possibly your best. I love the subtle drone-y elements throughout, and the female vocals on “Tortoise Regrets Hare”. Magic stuff.

  21. JY Says:

Thanks John A & Weaver, I appreciate that. We’re all very happy with the album and very pleased that it seems to be going down reasonably well.

Kiss of death saying that, of course - there’ll be a 1/5 in the Daily Watsit tomorrow saying I sound like Roland from Grange Hill.

    Aye,

    JY

  22. Neil Says:

I bought the full on box set (no golden ticket included mind!) and am very pleased with it. I have only listened to the new record 3 times but early impressions are very positive. ‘Tortoise regrets here’ is a cracker, the title track also jumps out at you. However you have set the barrier very high after the excellent leopard.

The other 2 CD’s in the box are also very good; I like a lot of the ‘dance’ orientated remixes and the covers records has prompted me to begin exploring some of the other artists featured.

    Well worth the additional cash.

  23. Billy Says:

Just listened to it for the third time and like your other albums a definite slow burner. Only downside is it makes me want to sit in a bar by an open fire drinking malt whisky and I can’t stand the stuff.

  24. Stewart Says:

I was driving along the dark country roads last Monday with my son after watching a less than enthralling Fraserburgh v Aberdeen testimonial match when Tortoise Regrets Hare came on the Vic Galloway prog on Radio Scotland. I was intrigued to say the least. It was the male/female chorus that hooked me. The next evening I ordered the CD on impulse and am now listening for the first time. Mightily impressed! I know this is going to leave a lasting impresion on me. Bonus is the gig in Aberdeen in November.

  25. Hadamaktub Says:

I was at your gig in Glasgow, my first time seeing you perform live, and it was a really enjoyable show. In particular Rozi Plain singing with you had something of Damien Rice/Lisa Hannigan about it, which is the kind of thing that makes hairs stand and fingers tingle.
Hope to see you again in Glasgow soon, and do bring Malcolm Middleton/Aiden Moffat with you if you can! I see you’re gigging with Middleton in London. And wee Rozi on stage with you guys as well? I ask too much…

  26. Kelvin75 Says:

Also drew an oval that I took to be a rock and closely spaced parallel lines slanting up to the right. ,
